His residency was completed at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Surgery Program, followed by a fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he also has a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery. While at Harvard, he served as Chief Resident in Orthopaedics and was appointed to the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the number one ranked hospital in the United States. He also has a certificate of added qualifications in hand surgery. Dr. Steinberg has been selected to be an instructor in shoulder arthroscopy by the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He teaches advanced arthroscopic techniques to orthopaedic surgeons from around the world at the Orthopaedic Learning Center (Rosemont, IL). In January of 2011, Dr. Steinberg was named in the nationally recognized Becker's Orthopedic and Spine Review as one of the top 45 hand and upper extremity surgeons in the country.

Throughout the past 15 years, Dr. Steinberg has performed over 10,000 successful surgeries. He has been one of the team physicians for the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars since their inception in 1993. He has performed multiple successful surgeries for many skilled NFL players, including starting quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, defensive backs, and lineman. In addition to his orthopaedic surgery training, he has an engineering background and continues to perform biomechanical research in one of his areas of interest, compartment syndrome. He holds six patents and has published multiple articles in peer review, medical and engineering journals including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and The Journal of Biomechanics. Most recently, Dr. Steinberg and his co-authors were honored to have their paper reporting on groundbreaking research in compartment syndrome published in the international peer review journal, Physiological Measurement.
